Even Though I Walk . . . I Will Fear No Evil

Psalm 23 is one of the most read and memorized passages in the Bible. The Psalm instills confidence in God who provides restoration to a fearful, panic, and troubled heart. God also provides guidance for His sheep as a good and caring Shepherd. He does all these just for His name's sake. Many people, both young and old have recited Psalm 23 in different life circumstances.

I remember in 1981 when Comfort was going to hospital to deliver our first child; I told her to be reciting Psalm 23; not as a charm, but as an affirmation of our trust in God. It worked! The fear that gripped our hearts because of our experience at the early stage of the pregnancy was overcome with the assurance "I will fear no evil, for you are with me."

In this trying period when the whole world is under serious siege of Coronavirus pandemic, movement is restricted, and to compound the matter, no cure has been found yet for the virus. What we have are some health precautions such as sheltering in place, washing of hands, not touching one's face, social distancing and others. There are many conflicting theories yet, the virus is spreading. Corona virus came as an intruder and "thief" into humanity's affairs. It has been caught and arrested. Its final execution is about to happen. The pertinent question is "What kind of believers are we supposed to be; knowing fully well that our God is in control? This is the answer Psalm 23:4 provides. David the writer of the Psalm, was very realistic.

He did not deny the presence of evil, neither did he downplay his emotional feelings. Realistically he said, "Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death. "He also confessed his faith in the omnipotent God, "I will fear no evil, for you are with me." David's faith was anchored on the presence of God, "for you are with me." When believers are sure of God's presence, they are sure where ever they are, they are not alone. When they are passing through water, fire, in the Lion's den, in troubled sea, and in atmosphere infected with Coronavirus, the Lord is there. They are not afraid. Even if death should come because of the pandemic, believers are not afraid. Because for them to live is Christ and to die is gain.

Do you want to walk in the valley of the shadow of death and fear no evil? The starting point is to "walk", having fellowship with God. Two cannot walk together unless they agree. Is Jesus your Savior, Lord, and friend? He alone knows how long this pandemic will last. You can walk confidently and fear no terror of the day or night because God is with you.
